What is constipation?

Constipation occurs when bowel movement become difficult or less frequent than normal according to cleavelandclinic.org. The frequency of time between bowel movements varies from person to person. For some, it may be several times a day and for others may be one to two times a week. Exceeding three days without a bowel movement is considered to be too long. The stool becomes harder and more difficult to pass after three days.

Causes?

The most common reason for constipation is the insufficient fiber in one’s diet or changes in regular diet. Chronic constipation may be the result of poor diet, dehydration, side effects from certain medications, or stress. Various medical conditions may also contribute or aggravate constipation. For example, colorectal cancer is a medical condition that can cause constipation but it typically is accompanied by other symptoms like weight loss or blood in the stool. Common causes are:

  • Insufficient fiber intake
  • Poor hydration
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • Excessive consumption of dairy products
  • Stress
  • Narcotics and/or antidepressants
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Colon cancer
  • Underactive thyroid

Treatment

  • Drink two to four extra glasses of water a day
  • Drink warm fluids, particularly in the morning
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Eat prunes
  • Exercise at least five times a week

This is a common complaint which can generally be prevented with a healthy diet, proper hydration, and an active lifestyle. If ever constipated, laxatives should not be taken without speaking to a medical professional beforehand. If you experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or blood from the rectum, seek medical attention immediately.
